Nervous About Massage

Nervous to book massage treatment? - your questions answered!

Having been a professional massage therapist for many years I sometimes see people who become self conscious before, and at the beginning of the massage session - this is very often when clients are new to massage or myself as a therapist. In this weeks blog I look at some of the embarrassing questions that you may have and hopefully I will be able to provide some reassuring answers. The massage therapy sessions I provide are completely professional and tailored to your needs accordingly.

Do I have to be naked during a massage?

The answer is no, you don’t have to be completely naked for a massage but removing your clothing except your underwear is most useful. Any areas which are not being massaged are covered with towels to preserve modesty. For women, it will usually be necessary to undo the bra strap so that the back can be massaged fully. I will always wait outside the treatment room while you undress and knock before coming in.

Will the massage hurt? - what if I don’t like it?

Before your first treatment we will discuss your needs and areas that need to be worked on. I will always ask if the pressure is right for you and can be flexible to your wishes. It is always advantageous to communicate openly with me so that we can work together in treating your condition and parts of the body which most need it. Deep tissue massage, as it says, focusses on reaching the deeper layers of muscle and tissue which is designed to release painful muscle knots and restore elasticity. During the treatment you may feel some discomfort, but you must always let me know if you are outside your pain threshold. You may also feel soreness after the massage, but this will ease the following day and leave you feeling relaxed and a lot more mobile!

Should I talk during a massage?

It is entirely up to you if you would like to talk during your treatment. Some clients prefer to close their eyes and relax in silence while others like to chat. Rest assured, anything discussed stays within the treatment room. If you are feeling tense for the first couple of sessions, sometimes talking can help you relax - it is completely up you!

I’m self conscious about a certain part of my body, can I avoid showing that area?

People are self conscious for a variety of reasons, it could be that they are overweight, have scars, excess body hair or are just plain shy. Please do not let this prevent you from seeking massage treatment which could be so beneficial to your wellbeing. As I have mentioned before, I provide a completely professional, flexible and sensitive service which is entirely based around your needs.

If you have any questions that haven’t been answered by this weeks blog then please do get in touch so that I can put you at ease before a first treatment. Whether you need a massage for injuries, part of a training programme, you are a professional dancer, have postural imbalances from office work or are simply stressed out - massage can really be a positive experience enabling you to live your daily life without aches and pains.

Have a great week!
